Woodgrove Entertainment Precinct:

Activating the Edges

A new hospitality precinct and public square for QIC in Melton, near Melbourne, Victoria. The project inverts the prevailing internalised shopping mall experience to create an inhabited threshold between internal retail space and an outdoor public square.

PROJECT STORY

The scheme inverts the internalised configuration of the existing shopping mall, which currently has a food court at its core, to focus on a remaking of the building edge as the interface between 2000m2 of new hospitality and retail space inside and a new 1000m2 public square outside.

The proposed edge condition takes the form of an extended timber-framed colonnade wrapping the new section of building. This singular yet flexible and continuous element integrates the regional Australian vernacular of wrap-around verandas with the European colonnade surrounding a square. The timber frame has been designed and engineered to be efficiently prefabricated before being brought to site for swift assembly.
